Plant Description:

Mussaenda erythrophylla, also known as the red Mussaenda or Philippine Mussaenda, is a species of flowering plant in the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the Philippines, and is a popular ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions.

This plant can grow up to 3 meters tall and forms a dense, multi-stemmed shrub. The leaves are oblong-elliptic and glossy, and are typically 15-20 cm long. The most striking feature of this plant is its large, showy inflorescences, which are composed of small, white, tubular flowers surrounded by bright red, petal-like bracts. These bracts can be red, pink, yellow and occasionally cream. Flowers appear through out the year but most commonly found in rainy season.

Mussaenda erythrophylla is relatively easy to grow and is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, but it prefers well-drained, moist soils and partial shade. It can be propagated by stem cuttings or seeds.

It's an easy care plant, and ideal for gardens, patios and terraces. Also, it can be grown as a potted plant.

It's also a butterfly, bee and bird attracting plant.

Growing tips:

To care for your Mussaenda erythrophylla, follow these tips:

  • Light: This plant prefers partial shade, but can tolerate full sun as well. It's a good idea to protect it from intense midday sun, which can cause leaf burn.

  • Water: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant thoroughly, and then allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again.

  • Soil: Mussaenda erythrophylla prefers well-draining, moist soils that are rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, perlite and potting soil will work well.

  • Fertilizer: Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks, starting from the month of March to September

  • Pruning: Prune your Mussaenda erythrophylla regularly to control its size and shape. Prune off any damaged or diseased branches, and pinch back the tips of new growth to encourage bushier growth. Deadhead spent blooms to promote reblooming.

  • Pest and Disease: The plant is generally pest and disease free. However, check for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects, which can be controlled with a mild insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

  • Temperature: Mussaenda erythrophylla is hardy in temperatures between 60 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit(15-32 degree celsius)

By providing the right amount of light, water, and fertilizer, as well as regular pruning and pest control, you can keep your Mussaenda erythrophylla healthy and blooming.
