Overview

Golden sweet potatoes, also known as Ipomoea batatas 'Golden', are a delicious and nutritious variety of sweet potato, known for their golden-yellow flesh and skin. They are a versatile and easy-to-grow crop, providing numerous health benefits.

Planting

  1. Choosing the right location: Golden sweet potatoes thrive in well-draining, loose soil and require at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Choose a location with these conditions for optimal growth.
  2. Soil preparation: Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage. The ideal soil pH is between 5.8 and 6.5.
  3. Timing: Plant golden sweet potatoes after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (16°C). In most regions, this will be between April and June.
  4. Planting method: Plant slips (young sweet potato plants) or vine cuttings about 12-18 inches apart, in rows 3-4 feet apart. Bury the slip or cutting about halfway in the soil, ensuring the leaves are above the ground.

Growing

  1. Watering: Golden sweet potatoes require consistent moisture. Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  2. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting, and side-dress with additional fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can lead to excessive vine growth and reduced tuber production.
  3. Weeding: Keep the area around the plants weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
  4. Pest and disease control: Monitor plants for common pests like sweet potato weevils, whiteflies, and aphids. Employ organic or chemical control methods as needed. Practice crop rotation to reduce disease incidence.

Care

  1. Hilling: As the vines grow, hill up soil around the base of the plants to encourage tuber development and prevent exposure to sunlight.
  2. Pruning: Prune any excessive vine growth to redirect energy towards tuber development.
