Plant Description:

- A very heavy yielding variety with medium sized fruit from south India. Regular bearing. Pulp is fibreless, yellow and sweet. Good keeping quality.
- This variety bears fruit twice a year in coastal areas. The second harvest is in late October or November.
- Mangoes are the kings of the tropical fruit.
- They are delicious, nutritious and wholesome.
- The Mango is the favourite fruit of Indians. However rich or poor the person may be - he will eat mangoes!
- This is a fruit of Indian origin.
- There exist thousands of mango varieties in India. Each state, district, taluk and village swears by its own favourite one (the best in the world - as they say).
- The mango tree is ever green - with a dense canopy.
- New shoots mature for a full year before fruiting.
- Flowers appear from November to April and fruit from February to August. This varies as per distance from the coast and the variety.
- This plant is the symbol for puravabhadrpada nakshatra.

Growing tips:

- The mango tree is a long lived one.
- It should be planted at a minimum distance of 8 meters between two plants.
- Mango trees require full sunlight to fruit well. It will grow in lesser light but not fruit well or may not fruit at all.
- Grafted plants are planted as seed ones are not true to type.
- Good soil preperation is required.
- Staking is required for young plants. Planting ? Planting is recommended in June. Pits of 1 meter width x 1 meter length x 1 meter deep should be taken. Top soil from these pits should be mixed with 50 kgs farm yard manure / well decomposed cow dung manure, 2 kgs of bone meal, 2 kgs of single super phosphate and 50 gms follidol dust. Mix evenly to ensure proper distribution of the manure, fertilizer and pesticide.
Watering ? Water can be done every 10 to 15 days in winter and at weekly intervals during summer.

Farming tips:

MANGO - the king of fruits.
Climate -
- Mango is a tropical fruit, but it can be grown up to 1,100 m above mean sea level.
- Plants do not set fruit if there is high humidity, rain or frost during flowering.
- The Temperature between 24 and 27 is ideal for its cultivation.
- Higher temperaturse during fruit development and maturity gives better quality fruits.
- Regions having bright sunny days and moderate humidity during flowering are ideal for mango growing.

Soil -
- Mango can be grown on a wide variety of soils under varied climatic conditions.
- It can be grown from alluvial to lateritic soils except in black cotton soil having poor drainage.
- It grows well in soils with slightly acidic pH.
- It does not perform well in soils having ph beyond 7.5.
- Soils having good drainage are ideal for mango.

Cultivation -
- Different systems of planting like square, rectangular and hexagonal are followed at different places. Plants should be planted at 8 x 8 meters in light soils and 10 x 10 mts in rich and heavy soils.
- However square and rectangular systems are the most popular.
- Pits of 1m x 1m x1m size are dug, these are exposed to sun for about 30 days.
- Before planting, pits are filled with well rotten farmyard manure.
- The top and sub soil are taken out reparately while digging the pits.
- Top soil from these pits should be mixed with 50 kgs farm yard manure or well decomposed cow dung manure, 2 kgs of bone meal, 2 kgs of single super phosphate and 50 gms follidol dust. Mix evenly to ensure proper distribution of the manure, fertilizer and pesticide.

Planting -
- As mango plants do not come true to type ? grafted plants are usually planted.
- Staking of plants is recommended.
- Bottom shoots should be removed.
- Small fruit should be removed for the first 5 to 6 years.

Watering -
- Water can be done every 10 to 15 days in winter and at weekly intervals during summer.
